Alley Action Project is a grass roots movement focusing on helping neighborhood residents develop and implement community building and improvement projects. Alley Action projects can be designed to work in a very specific area or be a more broadly based idea. Their main focus is on the concept that a community can begin to solve problems with creativity and neighborhood involvement.
Their projects bring together diverse community members from Troy, NY and the Capital Region. Their demonstration project recently completed in the Osgood Neighborhood of Troy brought together children, seniors, families, neighbors and other interested people to design and apply a large mural to the alley face of a building that had been regularly tagged by graffiti. It has been shown over time that property owners who maintain their buildings through art, care and maintenance are not often attacked by graffiti.
The city of Troy has 43 miles of alleyway, much of which is in various states of disrepair. What was once a vibrant meeting place for neighbors, now hosts overgrown weeds and loose trash. Disrepair also presents a serious problem for medical and emergency personnel, who use the alleys as one of the main sources of entry into buildings. It is the goal of the Alley Action project to restore these alleys back to a safe, neighborhood meeting places with caring, creativity and community member involvement.
